Project Selection Process

If you have submitted a request to us already via our Project Scoping Form or you were thinking of doing so, you might have some questions around the selection rationale and criteria.

Project Sourcing

Sourcing for projects usually happens between May and September, ahead of the upcoming academic year starting in September – during this time you may have received correspondence from the Applied Projects Team, giving you the opportunity to submit projects to our scheme.

As project submissions are received, they are reviewed by the Applied Projects Team and split by subject area. This allows us to send appropriate projects to the right subject tutors.

Project Selection

In September the students start their new academic year, and this is when your project briefs are shared with academic tutors across the institution.

Modules are very individual; some require a smaller number of project options. Larger modules require many more. Your project submissions allow the Applied Projects Team to provide a variety of projects to each academic tutor, allowing them to select something appropriate to their module.

Updates and Correspondence

The academic will then select the projects they wish their students to work on and let us know which projects have been selected. This is when we contact you to let you know if your project has been taken up. At this point, we will hand over responsibility to the academic team, although we will remain a point of contact should you have any issues or require any assistance relating to your project.

If your project is not selected in Semester 1, it will then roll over to Semester 2. If it is not selected during the academic year, you will be invited to resubmit your projects for the following year. We will be in touch with you regarding your options.

Whilst we can never offer a guarantee that your project will be selected, below explains some of the more common reasons why this might be the case.

Selection Process Considerations

  1. The project you have submitted has been over-sourced, for example web design and video production projects are high in demand but the number of projects needed is comparatively low.
  2. There might not be enough detail in your project brief for the academic, which makes it difficult for the academic to know if it would be suitable. We will contact you to provide more information if this is the case
  3. Your project might fit better in a different opportunity e.g., short placements
  4. The project doesn’t fit with what the students need to achieve from an assessment point of view or appropriate for their level of study

Other Options

As well as Applied Projects we also have other opportunities available at the university which may be better suited to your business needs, please see below for more information.
